what are some of the differences and similarities of the atmospheres of the four inner solar system planets?
I’m having trouble finding this out. Is this just basically the different characteristics of the four planets?
Its easier to start with the similarities. There are none.
The differences are significant. Mercury has nearly no atmosphere at all. Venus has a thick toxic atmosphere of CO2 and sulfur, methane, and acid vapor at higher altitudes, AND an atmospheric pressure about 100 times higher. Finally Mars has an extremely light wispy atmosphere of mainly CO2 at a pressure about 1/100th that of Earth.
Even the weather is profoundly different on all those planets as well. Mercury has no weather. Venus is the same temperature everywhere on the planet no matter where you are, (about 900 degrees F), with clouds that weigh tons, and Mars has planet wide dust storms, and tornados that look fierce, but would barely even affect your walking pace even if it landed on top of you because of how thin the air is.
Even the seasons, if they are even noticeable on Mars at all, are very erratic and unpredictable because of the planets “wobble”.
Most of the similarities between the inner planets have nothing to do with atmosphere. All 4 are mostly rocky, silicate planets. Venus is nearly the same size as Earth. There are channels on Mars that are believed to have been created at some point in the planets history by flowing water. Mars also has polar caps, but they are composed of CO2, not water ice.
We actually have more in common with several moons orbiting the gas giants, than we do the actual inner planets. Hope this was helpful.
